FEELGOOD SOCK STORY OF THE WEEK

A group of keen sewers in Hubbard, Ohio, have joined together to put smiles on the faces of children in third world countries who do not have any toy, by turning old socks into fun sock puppets.

Avis Mathews, coordinator of the sock puppet workshop which meets Hubbard Public Library, said 400 puppets were made and sent to the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Haiti in 2010, and in 2011 they plan to send 1,000 sock puppets.

Mathews said the best types of socks for the puppets are men's dress socks or ladies' ankle crew socks. Each sock is given a face made with buttons, ribbons, yarns, bells and pom-poms. She is able to complete four sock puppets in a half hour, but many others have joined in, including senior citizens, girl scouts and college students.

“It really has become a community effort. This is just one way to we can help spread joy to children,'' said Avis Mathews, and presumably have fun in the meantime.

What a great idea.
